Wouldn't It B Nice? (closed)

Wouldn't it be nice if we all treated eachother with a little more kindness? That's the basic idea behind Carrie Wittenstein's philosophy that has gone on to become Wouldn't It B Nice. The main product on the site, the shirts, are not meant to be the end of story, so to speak. Rather, the shirts are just the beginning - a launch point for inspiration, discussion, and empowerment.

The idea of paying it forward may have gotten more press years ago when a movie of the same title came out but the philosophy is as old as time. When we do something nice for someone else, it makes us feel good and hopefully that person will do something ni
ce as well. Sometimes they won't. The goal, of course, is to continue putting that good karma, good vibe if you will, out there into the universe.

Does anybody remember an old episode of Friends where Phoebe can't seem to do a good deed that was pure (i.e. that didn't in some way reward her or make her feel good)? I loved that episode because it reinforces what's true - doing good for others makes us feel good. Have you heard about people who, in a drive-through at coffee shops, will pay for the car behind them just because? These stories, as trite as they may sound compared to the big picture out there, are what restore my faith in humanity. We are all good people, even the grouchy lady at the grocery store check-out line. Kindness
is universal and if we could all practice it more, we'd all be better off.

Look at me on my soapbox when I'm supposed to be reviewing a shirt! The shirt I chose to review is the "be a voice" one. I thought it was appropriate for me because voicing my opinion, standing up for the underdog and making myself heard is something I've done since I was little. It also has a deeper meaning for me now that I'm a mommy. We're warrior moms (as two of my favorite media personalities have used the term recently, I'm not sure who it belongs to!) and it's our job to speak for the smallest and most innocent members of our society. Whether it be a medical cause (the original idea behind this shirt was to be a voice for autism) or something important to you as a mom (in my household, we're all a voice for allergy awareness, protecting our youngest member from food allergies!), being a voice is important.

The front and back of these shirts are printed (so people can have something to think about as you're walking away too!), and designs in these shirts come in baby and youth sizes as well (onesies and hats, oh my!) My daughter has a "b nice" shirt which is pretty adorable to see on an innocent little one - reminding us all of the basics in human kindness.

1 reader is going to win a great duo - 1 "be a voice" nice fit T or men's T AND 1 Todder T in either "b a voice", "b happy" or "b @ peace". To enter, comment here telling me one thing you have done recently that put some good karma into the universe or how the Wouldn't It B Nice philosophy has inspired you!

Something that I ALWAYS do and in fact when I am driving always look at people's gas tanks, is tell a person (even if we are driving on the interstate) that there gas tank is not closed. I will do everything in my powers to get up to the person and get them to roll down their window so that I can tell them. Even if they refuse to roll down their window I will point to their gas tank and say open so they understand. I am not sure what can happen, if anything, with a person driving with their gas tank open but I always envisioned another person flicking a cigarette out of their window and it bouncing into the open gas tank.

One thing that I always do is wait that extra 2 seconds to hold the door open for that person behind me...I know that it doesn't seem like much, but I also know how nice that it makes me feel when someone does it for me, especially when the good deed is accompanied by a kind smile!

This is going to sound silly- but the last nice thing I did was give my husband a backrub- even though I was also really tired and had had a long day. He does so much for me and asks so little in return- I was happy to be able to be nice to him in that way.

~ I too am a "Warrior Mom", and think it is important to make other people have something special sent to them to make their day. So I make my own handmade greeting cards, and send them to people I know need some cheering up. Or I just hand them out as I am out on errands to someone I think needs a smile.

One of the last nice things i have done is let someone with less groceries than i have go ahead of me. I feel so bad when the express lane isn't open and some poor person has only one or a few items and has to wait for me with a cart full to go first!

Pam said...

Is it horrible that I feel like I do nice things all the time and can't recall one now? One thing I always try to do is smile at people, treat them with respect, and teach my children to do the same. I love the philosophy - "be the change you want to see in the world" is amazing and oh so powerful. It reminds me that I do have the power to change the world simply by changing myself. I love it.

I always try to help the elderly, if they want it. Like today, a woman was trying to get her cart up on the sidewalk but she couldnt get it up there. I walked over and asked her if I could take it for her, and she thanked me twice. My daughter was with me, and she said that was nice of you mom, next time I'll help someone!
I like her seeing and saying things like that!

I truly believe in Karma and what goes around comes around.Recently I walked towards a convience store behind a very elderly man. The man pulled his money out of his pocket and as he did a couple of 20's and a 10 flew out and landed behind him. Well I sure could of used any amount of found money but being the good person I am, I picked up the money and chased the man down and returned all the money to him. A sense of goodness filled me. Somehow I hope the same would be bestowed on me if I were ever in the same situation.A.Anderson

One thing I've been doing a lot lately is, when I'm at a store, I'll straighten up a shelf or a rack if they're out of order or messy, I'll pick things up off the floor and put them back where they belong, etc. I figure it helps someone out along the way.

My sister-in-law is one of my best friends, and she's expecting twins any day now (in addition to having a 5 and 3 yr old). I have a new baby myself, but I went over and did her laundry, washed her dishes, and watched the kids so she could take a break. I almost didn't go because I was tired out - but I realized she is WAY more tired than I am!

I have been offering my assistance to an elderly friend. She was put into a nursing home and was being treated badly. I became her advocate of sorts and worked with her attorney to get her conditions greatly improved. I am continuing this fight and plan to keep them on their toes as long as necessary to ensure that she is well taken care of.

It may seem like a small thing, but I always put the grocery carts in the corral in the parking lot. I have seen too many of them left where they can be bumped by cars, and although the damage might be slight, they do leave damage.

The other day a lady was asking on twitter for someone to make a new button for her site since she was in need of a new one and she knows very little about graphic editing and such. I surprised her by making a new one for her, emailed her and told her i had seen her message asking for a new button on twitter and i noticed no one replied to her, she was quite happy that i had made her a new one for free, since she was offering three months of advertising on her website in exchange for a button. Of course, i told her i didn't need the advertising, that the button was absolutely free for her to have if she liked it.

I call it "paying it forward", this is what we should do for each other all the time, doing nice things for people not only make you feel good, but they pay off, something good always comes back to you when you do good stuff for other people without expecting something in exchange. :)
